SHE CAME FROM BETWEEN
Prologue
My feet had traced these boards a hundred times
the dust of time clinging to the soles
Hours and years had passed, yet time stood still.
Retracing my steps, I sensed something amiss.
A door moved - perhaps by wind, perhaps by will -
and as it closed, it released slow cascades of dust,
particles drifting like whispers through air.
Did I step over her - a threshold in time?
For in that instant, I felt transported to another era.
A painting caught in vision - my eyes transfixed upon the woman it portrayed.
How strange that I recognised her features.
Was I her, and she me?
Shapes and shades mirrored back a hidden nook of myself.
I had retraced history, and it held me suspended in the here and now.
The ground dissolved beneath me
space gave way -
and I returned to destinations unknown.
